White doe wanders onto a horse farm and befriends the horses first, then the dogs, then the family, until the whole farm becomes her herd

Friendship is magic, especially if it happens to be with an animal that looks like a straight-up fairytale creature.

Today is my birthday! I'm not kidding. Look at the date above this text - October 15th. I'm celebrating my birthday today, and this is precisely why I chose to shine a spotlight on this particular animal friendship story I came across. Not just because I love the whimsy and magical nature of it (because encountering a friendly white deer is pure magic, I tell you), but because I feel like the universe has sent me this story as a birthday gift. And yes, I will elaborate on that.

So, my name is Ayala, and it means "doe" in Hebrew. It's not the most common name, to say the least, but this is what I've been living with for exactly 35 years today. And this lovely creature from down here is also a doe (granted, she's much more beautiful than me, that's not even a competition). And get that - after this white doe befriended all living creatures on the farm, including the humans, she was named Selah - which is also a Hebrew name. We share names from the same linguistic origin, and my name is literally the personification of this magical animal.

I was never a big believer in anything, but I think the universe is sending me signs that I was supposed to encounter this whimsical story today, on my birthday, as a gift. And I know I was raised right, because I think gifts are meant for sharing. So the first thing on my mind, right after the astonishment of all these naming coincidences, was to shine a light on this beautiful friendship story and bring it to all of you. Because I don't want to enjoy my gift alone - every animal lover should enjoy some good wholesome animal content. That for sure will make me happy on my birthday.

This is the story of how this magical deer became a friend ++

The morning after I moved in with my horses to our farm, I woke up to see this out my window...

The beautiful line white deer the neighbors told me roams the area

She allowed me to approach softly and slowly, but was unsure of me

I have to stop for a second to appreciate how magical this white doe looks. It's like seeing a real-life fairytale unfold in front of our eyes. I love a good fantasy story (I've been reading Elantris recently - great book, rather dark though). And seeing this magical creature befriend every animal on the farm like a Disney princess is the closest I've ever seen to real-life magic. And besides, she's glowing. And what else glows? Right, magic. The more I reflect on that, the more I think this white doe really is magic. She's so beautiful, I'm sure these pictures don't do her justice.

I asked for a pet, and waited until she felt comfortable

Unsure of my dogs, she stuck by the horses for comfort, who she had made friends with in the night

She watched me instruct the dogs and bravely trusted they wouldn't harm her

In the mornings to come, I'd find her sharing hay with my horses, welcoming them to her land as they welcome her into their herd

Through the seasons, she would continually stop by

When a dog loves you - you know you're doing something right. Even if you're a white deer who's known to befriend any animal they come across. So, you see that dog? That's a friend right there. That's a friend in a friendship. And who's his friend? That's right, the white deer. What a lovely pair.

She was waiting in the driveway the day I brought my next horse home...

No longer cautious of me, she loves to be loved on

I love how the horses are all like, “Yeah, she might be a little different… Her ears are big, she's rather short, and her tail is awkward… But she's totally one of us. Selah is part of the herd. She's not a roommate - she's family.”
